Vulcraft is North America’s largest producer and leading innovator of open-web steel joists and joist girders, which are used for building construction. Vulcraft facilities obtain the majority of their steel from Nucor bar mills.
Vulcraft operates nine steel joist fabrication facilities in North America and is part of the Vulcraft/Verco Group of steel products.
Before there was Nucor, there was Vulcraft. In 1962, Nuclear Corporation of America – an American conglomerate – purchased Vulcraft. The venture proved successful and, a few years later, Nuclear built a steel mini mill nearby to provide a reliable source of steel bar for the joist maker. The combined success of both operations – Vulcraft and the mini mill – was the impetus for Nuclear’s subsequent decision to sell its other businesses and focus entirely on the steel business. In 1971, Nuclear Corporation changed its name to Nucor Corporation. Today, Vulcraft – South Carolina and Nucor Steel Darlington are still in operation.
